The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs met at 5:25 p.m. this day in camera in Room 520, Victoria Building.
Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators LeBreton, Johnstone, Balfour and Ruck (4).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Fairbairn and Maloney.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.
Pursuant to rule 88, the clerk presided over the election of a chairman.
The Honourable Senator Johnstone moved -- That the Honourable Senator Balfour be elected chairman of the Subcommittee.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
It was agreed -- That the Committee would seek through a motion by the Chair in the Senate the following Order of Reference:
That the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology be authorized to undertake a study on issues relating to persons coming under the jurisdiction of Veterans Affairs Canada including the availability, quality and standards of all benefits available to such persons.
It was agreed -- That the committee would travel to Charlottetown in September for briefings with Veterans Affairs Canada and that the clerk would prepare a budget for consideration by the subcommittee.
At 5:55 p.m. the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs met at 9:40 a.m. this day in camera in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable James Balfour, presiding.
Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Balfour, Cohen, and Ruck (3).
Pursuant to the Order of reference adopted by the Senate on Monday May 31, 1999, the committee proceeded to study on issues relating to persons coming under the jurisdiction of Veterans Affairs Canada including the availability, quality and standards of all benefits available to such persons.
The Chairman presented a draft budget for a visit to headquarters of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Cohen and seconded by the Honourable Senator Ruck -- That the following budget for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000 be concurred in and that the Chairman submit same to the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology.
Professional and other Services $ 3,000
Transportation and Communications $ 13,000
All other expenditures $ 1,000
Total: $ 17,500
At 9:52 a.m. the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
