The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:34 a.m. in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fairbairn, P.C., Grafstein, Gustafson, Oliver, Rossiter, Sparrow and Stratton (8).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering, Research Officer.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and the future of agriculture in Canada, consideration of a draft budget.
The Honourable Senator Gustafson moved, -- That the committee proceed in camera to discuss future business and a draft budget and that senators' staff be allowed to remain.
The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.
The Honourable Senator Oliver moved, -- That the budget be approved.
It was agreed to suspend debate to hear the witness.
At 9:19 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 9:21 a.m., the committee resumed.
WITNESS:
As an individual:
The Honourable Eugene F. Whelan, P.C., O.C.
Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and the future of agriculture in Canada, consideration of his fact finding trip to Codex Alimentarius.
The Honourable Eugene F. Whelan, P.C., made a presentation and answered questions.
At 10:20 a.m., the committee proceeded in camera.
It was agreed that the following budget, as amended, be adopted and brought to Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration for approval and that Senator Gustafson be authorized to request the necessary powers to him and travel from the Senate.

It was agreed, -- That the Clerk would prepare a work plan and supplementary budget for the purpose of completing a report on farm income safety nets for the next meeting of the committee.
At 10:26 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
