The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Mira Spivak, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Buchanan, P.C., Christensen, Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Sibbeston, Spivak and Taylor (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Nolin and Wilson (2).

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate and from the Library of Parliament, Lynne Myers, researcher.

The Committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated May 9, 2000, proceeded to study Bill S-20 (Tobacco Act). (See Issue No. 11, June 6, 2000, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From Non-Smokers' Rights Association (NSRA):

Lorraine Fry, General Manager.

From the Canadian Cancer Society:

Ken Kyle, Director of public issues;

Rob Cunningham, Senior Policy Analyst.

From the Senate of Canada:

The Honourable Senator Colin Kenny, co-sponsor of the Bill;

The Honourable Senator Pierre Claude Nolin, co-sponsor of the Bill.

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

It was agreed -- That the Chair writes to the appropriate ministers to express the committee support of the initiative of the Peigan Nation Project and ask them to find a solution to resolve the issue.

At 10:37 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
