The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 7:00 p.m. in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Comeau, Cook, Johnson, Mahovlich, Meighen, Robertson, Robichaud, P.C. and Watt (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, P.C., M.P., Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans:

Mr. Jack Stagg, Associate Deputy Minister;

Ms Liseanne Forand, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy;

Mr. David Bevan, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries Management;

Ms Iola Price, Acting Director General, Science Sector, Fisheries and Oceans Science Directorate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 7, 1999, the committee continued its examination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry.

The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal made an opening statement and, together with Mr. Bevan and Ms Price, answered questions.

It was agreed -- That the presentation of the minister be filed as an exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3 "2" with the Clerk of the Committee.

At 8:35 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
