The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 7:00 p.m. in Room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Comeau, Cook, Mahovlich, Perrault, P.C., Perry Poirier and Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent) (6).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate

Mr. David Bevan, Director General, Resource Management;

Mr. Lorne Anderson, A/Director General, Aquaculture Restructuring Adjustment;

Mr. Micheal Edwards, Senior Advisor, Aquaculture;

Ms Susan Farlinger, A/Director, Aboriginal Fisheries, Pacific Region.

Mr. Paul Macgillivray, Regional Director, Fisheries Management;

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 7, 1999, the committee continued its examination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry.

Mr. Bevan made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Anderson made a statement and answered questions.

Ms Farlinger made a statement and with Mr. Edwards, Mr. Macgillivray, Mr. Perry and Mr. Samis answered questions.

It was moved by Senator Robichaud --

That the material supplied by St. Andrew's Biological Station, Department of Fisheries and Oceans at the fact-finding visit to New Brunswick and Quebec be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 5 "6") with the Clerk of the Committee;

That the material supplied by the New Brunswick Depatment of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the fact-finding visit to New Brunswick and Quebec be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 5 "7") with the Clerk of the Committee;

That the material supplied by Huntsman Marine Science Centre at the fact- finding visit to New Brunswick and Quebec be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 5 "8") with the Clerk of the Committee;

That the material supplied by Jail Island Salmon at the fact-finding visit to New Brunswick and Quebec be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 5 "9") with the Clerk of the Committee;

That the material supplied by Atlantic Salmon Federation at the fact-finding visit to New Brunswick and Quebec be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 5 "10") with the Clerk of the Committee;

That the material supplied by Botsford Professional at the fact-finding visit to New Brunswick and Quebec be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 5 "11") with the Clerk of the Committee;

That the material supplied by the Maritime Fishermen's Union at the fact-finding visit to New Brunswick and Quebec be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 5 "12") with the Clerk of the Committee;

That the material supplied by the New Brunswick Salmon Growers' Association at the fact-finding visit to New Brunswick and Quebec be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 5 "13") with the Clerk of the Committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was moved by Senator Robichaud -- That Senator Perrault be elected Deputy Chair of the Committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was moved by Senator Perry -- That the following budget application for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001 be concurred in and that the Chair submit same to the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
