The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met at 3:30 p..m. this day in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Peter Stollery, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bolduc, Corbin, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Grafstein, Stollery and Taylor (7).

Other senators present: The Honourable senators Prud'hommme, P.C., Roche and Spivak (3).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade:

Mr. Jim Wright, Director General, Central, East and Southern Europe Bureau;

Mrs. Ann Collins, Director, Eastern Europe Division;

Mr. Robert Brooks, Deputy Director, Eastern Europe Division (Belarus, Caucasus, Central Asia, Moldova and Ukraine).

The committee resumed consideration of the Order of Reference to examine and report on emerging political, social, economic and security developments in Russia and Ukraine, taking into account Canada's policy and interests in the region, and other related matters (See committee proceeding of May 17, 2000, issue No. 8).

Mr. Wright made a statement and together with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 5:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
