The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day in camera, at 5:43 p.m. in Room 256-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Fraser, Gustafson, Hubley, Oliver, Stratton, Tkachuk, Tunney and Wiebe (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Sparrow (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 2.).

The committee considered a draft report on its fact-finding mission to Washington, D.C.

It was agreed - That a second draft be prepared based on the comments and recommendation presented.

It was agreed - That Senator Wiebe attend the New Rural Economy: From Challenge to Action CRRF 2001 conference in Muenster, Saskatchewan.

At 7:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Gustafson, Hubley, Oliver, Stratton, Tunney and Wiebe (6).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration:

Bernie Ward, Director, Analytical and Communications Service;

Gerry Luciuk, Director, Land Management and Diversification Service.

Bernie Ward made an opening statement and with Gerry Luciuk, answered questions.

At 10:43 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
