The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this, at 8:30 a.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Biron, Chalifoux, Day, Gustafson, Hubley, LeBreton, Oliver, Phalen, Stratton, Tunney and Wiebe (12).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 2.)

Jacques Proulx, President;

Marie Anne Rainville, Director of Public Affairs.

Jacques Proulx made an opening statement and with Marie Anne Rainville, answered questions.

The committee recessed at 10:11 a.m.

The committee resumed at 10:15 a.m.

The Honourable Senator Tunney moved, - That this committee instruct the Chairman to send a letter of apology expressing our regrets to the Minister of Agriculture for any embarrassment that this committee may have caused in its Fifth Report, which wrongly accused the Minister of cancelling his appearance before the committee on October 18, and that a copy of the letter be sent to Barrie Wilson, of the Western Producer, and all members of the committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

The Honourable Senator Wiebe tabled a document entitled "MPs, senators take aim at agriculture minister" from The Western Producer, with the Clerk of the Committee and filed as Exhibit No. 5900 A1/SS-18"1".

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Wiebe - That the committee now adjourn.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

At 10:41 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
