The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 3:34 p.m. in room 256-S, Centre Block, the Acting Chair, the Honourable Senator Elizabeth Hubley, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Biron, Gustafson, Hubley, Jaffer, Oliver, Phalen, Tkachuk and Tunney (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Sparrow (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering and Frédéric Forge.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada (For complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.).

WITNESSES:

From the Delegation of the European Commission in Canada:

Ambassador Danièle Smadja, Head of the Delegation;

Philippe Musquar, Counsellor, Economic and Commercial Affairs;

Fred Kingston, Senior Advisor, Economic and Commercial Affairs.

The Clerk informed the committee of the absence of the Chair and presided over the election of an Acting Chair.

The Honourable Senator Tunney moved - That theHonourable Senator Hubley be Acting Chair of the Committee for this meeting.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

Ambassador Smadja made an opening statement and with Fred Kingston and Philippe Musquar, answered questions.

At 5:22 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
