(14) [English] The Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and commerce met at 3:50 p.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Kolber, presiding. Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Furey, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Kelleher, P.C., Kolber, Meighen, Oliver, Poulin, Setlakwe, Taylor and Tkachuk (11). In attendance: Mr. Stephen L. Harris, and from the Parliamen tary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Economic Division: Mr. Alexandre Laurin, Research Officer. Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate. WITNESSES: From the Consumers' Association of Canada: Gail Lacombe, President and Chief Executive Officer; Jenny Hillard, Vice-President, Issues and Policy; Kim Boydell, Director of Policy Research. From the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions: Julie Dickson, Assistant Superintendent, Regulation Sector; Normand Bergevin, Director, Legislation and Regulations, Legislation and Precedents Division. Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, the committee continued its examin ation of Bill C-8, An Act to establish the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada and to amend certain Acts in relation to financial institutions. Ms Lacombe and Ms Hillard of the Consumers' Association of Canada made a statement and with the assistance of Mr. Boydell answered questions. Ms Dickson and Mr. Bergevin from the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions made a statement and answered questions. At 5:25 p.m. the committee continued its proceedings in camera At 5:35 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair. ATTEST:
