The Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and commerce met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in room 505, Victoria Building, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Di Nino, Furey, Hubley, Kelleher, P.C., Kroft, Maheu, Mahovlich, Poulin, Setlakwe and Tkachuk (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator LaPierre (1).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Law and Government Division: Mr. Geoff Kieley, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 5, 2002, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-23, An Act to amend the Competition Act and the Competition Tribunal Act.

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Auto Workers:

Mr. Jim Stanford, CAW Economist;

Mr. Gary Fane, Director, CAW Transportation.

As individuals:

Ms Margaret F. Sanderson, Vice-President, Charles River Associates.

Mr. Dan McTeague, M.P.

From the Canadian Survey Research Council:

Mr. Peter Greensmith, President and Executive Vice-President, Market Facts of Canada Ltd.

Mr. Fane and Mr. Stanford from the Canadian Auto Workers made a statement and answered questions.

Ms Sanderson and Mr. McTeague made statements and answered questions.

Mr. Greensmith from the Canadian Survey Research Council made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:25 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
