The Standing Senate Committee on Defence and Security met this day, at 6:20 p.m. in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Cordy, Kenny and LaPierre (4).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer, Major General (ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Adviser, Deputy Commissioner (ret'd) Roy Berlinquette, RCMP, Senior Security Adviser, Chief Warrant Officer (ret'd) Maurice Dessureault, Military Advisor.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Lieutenant-General (Retired) Charles Belzile, Chairman; and
Colonel (Retired) Alain Pellerin, Executive Director.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 31, 2001, the committee proceeded to its introductory survey of the major security and defence issues facing Canada with a view to preparing a detailed work plan for future comprehensive studies. (See Issue No. 1, Monday, July 18, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)
Lieutenant-General (ret'd) Belzile made a statement and with Colonel (ret'd) Pellerin answered questions.
At 7:45 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 7:50 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting.
Major General (ret'd) Addy made a statement and answered questions.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Atkins - That the study on the health care provided to veterans of war and of peacekeeping missions referred to the committee by the Senate on October 4, 2001 be referred for consideration and report pursuant to the Rules of the Senate to the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs.
The question being put on the motion, it was resolved in the affirmative.
At 8:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
