The Standing Senate Committee on Defence and Security met this day, at 6:00 p.m. in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Day, Forrestall, Hubley, Kenny, Nolin and Wiebe (7).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Stollery (1).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer, General (ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Adviser, Chief Warrant Officer (ret'd) Maurice Dessureault, Military Adviser.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 31, 2001, the committee proceeded to its introductory survey of the major security and defence issues facing Canada with a view to preparing a detailed work plan for future comprehensive studies. (See Issue No. 1, Monday, July 18, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)
Mr. Fadden made a statement and, along with Mr. Dickenson, answered questions.
At 7:30 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 7:35 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting.
Professor Bland made a statement and answered questions.
At 9:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
