The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day, at 9:30 a.m. in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Banks, Day, Forrestall, Kenny, LaPierre, Meighen, Wiebe (8).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer, General (ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Adviser, Chief Warrant Officer (ret'd) Maurice Dessureault, Military Adviser.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
WITNESSES:

Vice-Admiral Ron Buck, Chief of the Maritime Staff;
Commodore Jacques J. Gauvin, Acting Assistant Chief of the Maritime Staff;
Chief Petty Officer First Class Serge Joncas, Maritime Command Chief Petty Officer;
Lieutenant General M.K. Jeffery, Chief of the Land Staff;
Chief Warrant Officer JER Munger, Officer of Land Force Command.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 31, 2001, the Committee proceeded to its introductory survey of the major security and defence issues facing Canada with a view to preparing a detailed work plan for future comprehensive studies. (See Issue No. 1, Monday, July 18, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference)
Vice-Admiral Buck made a statement and with Commodore Gauvin and CPO1 Joncas answered questions.
Lieutenant General M.K. Jeffery made a statement and with Chief Warrant Officer Munger answered questions.
At 11:09 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 11:17 a.m., the committee resumed its sitting.
At 1:08 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
