The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day in camera, at 8:00 a.m. in room 520, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Cordy, Day, Forrestall, Kenny, LaPierre, and Wiebe (7).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer and Major General (ret'd) Keith McDonald.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 16, 2002, the committee proceeded upon its examination on the need for a national security policy for Canada.
WITNESSES:
From the Department of the Solicitor General:
Mr. Michel D'Avignon, Director General, National Security, Policing and Security Branch;
Mr. Mike Theilmann, Chief, Operational Readiness, Counter-Terrorism Division.
From the Department of Citizenship and Immigration:
Ms Joan Atkinson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Program Development.
At 8:55 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 9:00 a.m., the committee continued its meeting in public in room 505.
Mr. D'Avignon made a statement and, with Mr. Theilmann, answered questions.
At 10:30 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 10:35 a.m., the committee continued its sitting.
Ms Atkinson made a statement and answered questions.
