The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 9:31 a.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Lowell Murray, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Bolduc, Comeau, Cools, Doody, Ferretti Barth, Finnerty, Mahovlich, Murray, P.C., Stratton, Tunney (11).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Susan Peterson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch;

Frank Vermaeten, Senior Chief, Policy and Program Operations, Federal-Provincial Relations Divisions, Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch;

Dominique LaSalle, Chief, Strategic Planning, Federal-Provincial Relations Division, Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on May 31, 2001, the committee undertook its examination of Bill C-18, An Act to amend the Federal-Provincial Fiscal Arrangements Act.

Ms Peterson made an opening statement and with Mr. Vermaeten answered questions from members of the committee.

At 10:32 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair
