The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 9:30 a.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Murray, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Bolduc, Cools, Doody, Ferretti Barth, Moore, Murray, P.C., Stratton, Tunney (9).
In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

From the Department of Finance:
John Connell, Senior Chief, Economic Development Policy Division, Economic Development and Corporate Finance Branch;
Susan Peterson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch;
Barbara Anderson, Director, Federal-Provincial Relations Divi sion;
Stéphane Hardy, Senior Chief, Education, Social Policy Division.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on June 13, 2001, the committee undertook its examination of the role of government in the financing of deferred maintenance costs in Canada's post-secondary institutions.
Dr. Brzustowski made an opening statement and answered questions from members of the committee.
Ms Peterson made an opening statement and with Mr. Connell answered questions from members of the committee.
At 11:11 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair
