The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 11:00 a.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Murray, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bolduc, Cools, Day, Doody, Ferretti-Barth, Furey, Mahovlich, Murray, P.C., Tunney (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Cook, Finnerty and Rompkey, P.C. (3).

In attendance: Mr. Alexandre Laurin, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Roger Grimes, Prime Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on June 12, 2001, the committee continued its examination of the effectiveness of and possible improvements to the present equalization policy in ensuring that provincial governments have sufficient revenues to provide reasonably comparable levels of public service at reasonably comparable levels of taxation.

Mr. Grimes made an opening statement and answered questions from members of the committee.
