The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 9:32 a.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Murray, P.C.. presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Bolduc, Comeau, Cools, Doody, Ferretti Barth, Finnerty, Furey, Mahovlich, Murray, P.C. and Tunney (11).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Oliver (1).
In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Elizabeth A. Cody, Executive Director, Fiscal and Economic Policy, Nova Scotia Finance Department
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on June 12, 2001, the committee continued its examination of the effectiveness of and possible improvements to the present equalization policy in ensuring that provincial governments have sufficient revenues to provide reasonably comparable levels of public service at reasonably comparable levels of taxation.
Mr. LeBlanc made an opening statement and answered questions from members of the committee.
At 11:05 a.m., the committee continued its meeting in camera to discuss a draft budget.
The Chairman presented the following draft budget for the fiscal year 2001-2002 for consideration by members of the committee:

After discussion, the Honourable Senator Doody moved - That the committee adopt the proposed budget and that the Chair submit the budget to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
The question being put on the motion it was adopted.
At 11:20 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
