The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs met at 3:45 p.m., this day, in room 257, East Block, the Honourable Senator Milne, Chair, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Banks, Beaudoin, Cools, Grafstein, Gustafson,Joyal, P.C., Milne, Moore and Pearson (10).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Nolin.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Holmes.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on April 3, 2001, that the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs be authorized to examine the Chief Electoral Officer's Report for 2000 on the 37th general election; and that the Committee submit its report no later than June 30, 2001. (See Issue No. 4, Wednesday, April 4, 2001 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Mr. Jean-Pierre Kingsley, Chief Electoral Officer;
Rennie Molnar, Director of Register, Geography andInformation Technology;
Holly E. McManus, Legal Counsel;
Janice R. Vézina, Director of Election Financing.
Jean-Pierre Kingsley and Rennie Molnar made an opening statement and, together with Holly McManus and Janice Vézina, answered questions.
The committee considered the following budget for legislation for 2001-2002:
Summary Of Expenditures
 
Professional and Other Services  $8 200
Transportation and Communications $3 160
Other Expenditures $1 000
Total $12 360
The Honourable Senator Moore moved adoption of the budget.
The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.
At 5:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
