The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day in room 705, Victoria Building at 8:38 a.m., the Chair, the Honourable Senator Donald H. Oliver, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Day, Fairbairn, Gustafson, Hubley, LaPierre, Oliver, Ringuette, Tkachuk and Wiebe (9).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lori Srivastava and Frédéric Forge.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 31, 2002, the committee began to consider the impact of climate change on Canada's agriculture, forests and rural communities and the potential adaptation options focusing on primary production, practices, technologies, ecosystems and other related areas. (For a complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Michael Brklacich, Professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.
From the University of Guelph:
Barry Smit, Professor, Department of Geography.
The Chair made an opening statement.
It was agreed, — That the committee invite representatives from the Canadian Association of Agri-Retailers and from the Federal Government to appear and that the Clerk make the necessary arrangements.
Michael Brklacich made a presentation and answered questions.
Barry Smit made a presentation and answered questions.
At 9:45 a.m., Senator Wiebe took the Chair.
At 10:48 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
