The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 6:22 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Joan Cook, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Cochrane, Cook, Hubley, Johnson, and Watt (6).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Research Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference pertaining to its study on matters relating to quota allocations and benefits to Nunavut and Nunavik fishermen (See Issue No. 8 of the Committee Proceedings).

APPEARING:

The Honourable Olayuk Akesuk, Minister of Sustainable Development, Government of Nunavut.

WITNESSES:

From the Nunavut Department of Sustainable Development:

Mr. Alex Campbell, Deputy Minister;

Mr. Carey Bonnell, Manager, Fisheries and Sealing.

From the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board:

Mr. Ben Kovic, Chairman;

Ms. Michelle Wheatley, Director, Wildlife Management;

Mr. Michael d'Eca, Legal Advisor.

The Honourable Olayuk Akesuk made a presentation and, with Mr. Bonnell and Ms. Wheatley, answered questions.

Messrs. Kovic and d'Eca made a presentation and, with all the witnesses, answered questions.

At 8:22 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 7:12 p.m., in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Cochrane, Comeau, Cook, Hubley, Johnson, Mahovlich, Phalen, Trenholme Counsell, and Watt (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Kenny (1).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Research Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference pertaining to its study on matters relating to quota allocations and benefits to Nunavut and Nunavik fishermen. (See Issue No. 8 of the Committee Proceedings.)

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans:

Mr. David Bevan, Director General, Resource Management Directorate, Fisheries Management.

Mr. Bevan made a presentation and answered questions.

It was agreed — That the Chair correspond with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in relation to certain issues raised in the committee.

Questions continued.

At 9:05 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
