The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day in camera at 11:35 a.m., in room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Shirley Maheu presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Ferretti Barth, LaPierre and Maheu (4).
Participating via teleconference: The Honourable Senator Jaffer (1).
In attendance: Carol Hilling, Research Analyst, Library of Parliament.
The committee resumed its study upon key legal issues affecting the subject of on-reserve matrimonial real property on the breakdown of a marriage or common law relationship and the policy context in which they are situated.
The committee proceeded to study its draft interim report.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Ferretti Barth — That the hearings planned for October 27 and November 3, 2003 be postponed in order for the committee to concentrate its efforts on the draft interim report.
At 1:25 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Chaput, Ferretti Barth, Jaffer, Joyal, P.C., LaPierre and Maheu (7).
In attendance: Carol Hilling, Research Analyst, Library of Parliament.
The committee resumed its study upon key legal issues affecting the subject of on-reserve matrimonial real property on the breakdown of a marriage or common law relationship and the policy context in which they are situated.
The committee proceeded to study its draft interim report.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Jaffer — That the committee adopt the draft interim report as amended, including all corrections and comments and that the Steering Committee review the final version before tabling in the Senate.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
It was agreed — That Senator Jaffer draft a letter of response to Mrs. Margaret Gadwa with the input of other senators and that the Chair send it to Mrs. Gadwa.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Chaput — That the draft report of the delegation that went to Geneva and Strasbourg be approved and, as soon as it is finalized by the members of the delegation, that it be tabled in the Senate.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
At 1:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
