The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 4:04 p.m., in room 256-S, Centre Block, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Senator Keon, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Chaput, Comeau, Gauthier, Keon, Lapointe, Léger and Maheu (8).
In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Research Analyst, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
WITNESSES:
From the Department of Justice:
Marc Tremblay, General Counsel and Director, Official Languages Law Group;
Warren J. Newman, General Counsel, Constitutional and Administrative Law Section.
The committee continued its study of the operation of the Official Languages Act and of regulations and directives made thereunder.
Messrs. Tremblay and Newman answered questions.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Keon, — THAT Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion be invited to appear before the committee on March 24, 2003. The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Comeau, — THAT Minister Dion's March 24 appearance before the committee be televised. Following debate, the question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
At 6:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
