The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day, in camera at 12 p.m., in room 172-E Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Michael A. Meighen, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Day, Kenny, Meighen, and Wiebe (5).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senators Banks (1).

In attendance: From the Senate: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Dawson, Analysts; Sandeep Mukerji, Legislative Clerk; Veronica Morris, Communications Officer.

In accordance with rule 92(2)(e) the subcommittee considered a draft agenda.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, September 18, 2003 and the motion of the Main Committee on September 29, the Subcommittee commenced its study on veterans services and benefits, commemorative activities and veterans charter.

At 12:50 p.m. the subcommittee continued in public.

The subcommittee considered its draft budget.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Wiebe:

That the following budget application for year 2003-04 be concurred in, and

That the Chair submit same to the Standing Committee on National Security and Defence.

Professional and Other Services $ 6,900
Transportation and Communications $ 17,350
All Other Expenditures $ 500
Total $ 24,750

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 12:52 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Mr. Daly made a statement and answered questions.
