The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, in camera, at 6:15 p.m. in room 160-S, Center Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Nick G. Sibbeston, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carney, P.C., Chaput, Christensen, Gill, Johnson, Léger, Mercer, Sibbeston, St. Germain, P.C., and Trenholme Counsell (10).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Watt (1).
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Tonina Simeone.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain for the in camera portion of the meeting.
The committee proceeded to the consideration of a draft agenda.
At 7:30 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Friday, March 26, 2004, the committee began its study on the planned federal expenditures, as set out in the 2004-2005 Main Estimates and the March 2004 federal budget, in relation to programs and services delivered to First Nation communities by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.
APPEARING:
The Honourable Andrew Mitchell, P.C., M.P., Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.
WITNESSES:
From the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development:
Michael Horgan, Deputy Minister;
Caroline Davis, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services.
The minister made an opening statement and, with other witnesses, answered questions.
At 11:00 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
