The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day, at 6:05 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C. presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gill, Kelleher, P.C., Mercer and Tkachuk (6).

In attendance: Frédéric Forge and Tara Gray from Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada (See Issue No. 1, Tuesday, October 19, 2004, for full text of order of reference).

TOPIC: Meat Inspection and New Packing Plants certification.

WITNESSES:

Canadian Food Inspection Agency:

André Gravel, Executive Vice-President;

Krista Mountjoy, Vice-President, Operations;

Bill Anderson, Acting Director, Food of Animal Origin.

Mr. Gravel made a statement and together with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 7:20 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) the committee sat in camera to study its future agenda.

At 7:23 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met in camera this day, at 9:00 a.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C. presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Hubley, Kelleher, P.C., Mercer and Oliver (6).

In attendance: Frédéric Forge and Tara Gray from Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Tuesday, October 19, 2004, for full text of order of reference).

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) the committee sat in camera to study its draft report.

The members in turn instructed the research team in the direction they would like the report to take and the recommendations they would favour.

At 10 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
