The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met at 4 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Honourable Landon Pearson, Deputy Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Losier-Cool, Oliver and Pearson (4).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Marisa Ferretti Barth (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Laura Barnett.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 the committee continues its consideration of Canada's international obligations in regard to the rights and freedoms of children. (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the committee, Issue No.3.)

WITNESSES:

University College of Cape Breton, Children's Rights Center:

Professor, Katherine Covell.

First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada:

Cindy Blackstock, Executive Director.

Save the Children Canada:

Rita Karakas, Executive Director.

At 4:00 p.m., Professor Covell made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:00 p.m., Ms. Blackstock and Ms. Karakas made statements and answered questions.

At 6:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
