The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:11 a.m. this day, in room 160-S Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Lovelace Nicholas, Sibbeston and St. Germain, P.C. (3).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament, Lisa L. Patterson.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 30, 2006, the committee continued its study on the nature and status of the Government of Canada's Specific Claims policy. (See Issue No. 3, Tuesday, June 13, 2006, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

Mi'kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island:

Chief Darlene Bernard, Lennox Island Band, Chair;

Tracey Cutcliffe, Executive Director;

Tammy MacDonald, Research Director.

British Columbia Specific Claims Committee:

Grand Chief Ken Malloway, Acting Chair;

Jody Woods, Research Director, Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs.

The Chair made opening remarks.

Chief Darlene Bernard made opening remarks. Ms. Cutcliffe made a statement. They both answered questions.

At 9:47 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:51 a.m., the committee resumed.

Grand Chief Ken Malloway made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:32 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

National Chief Fontaine made a statement and, with Ms. Metallic, answered questions.

At 7:21 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:26 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Cropped Ear Wolf, Ms. First Rider and Mr. Healy each made a statement and answered questions.

At 8:21 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
