The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 12:30 p.m. in camera, in accordance with rule 92(2)(f), in room 9 of the Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Keon, Mercer and Murray, P.C. (4).

Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Michael Toye and Howard Chodos, Analysts; Michelle MacDonald, Committee Advisor.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, the committee continued to examine the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 1, Monday, November 27, 2006.)

It was agreed that senators' assistants be permitted to attend the meeting.

In accordance with rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.

At 1:25 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, the committee continued to examine the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 1, Monday, November 27, 2006.)

WITNESS:

Human Resources and Social Development Canada:

Peter Hicks, Executive Director, Strategic Analysis, Audit and Evaluation

Mr. Hicks made a presentation and answered questions.

At 1:48 p.m., the committee suspended its proceedings.

At 1:57 p.m., the committee reconvened in camera, in accordance with rule 92(2)(f).

It was agreed that senators' assistants be permitted to attend this meeting.

The committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that the committee adopt the interim draft report Embracing The Challenge of Aging, bearing in mind any corrections and observations made by members, as well as any technical amendments, and that the Chair table the report to the Senate.

The committee discussed future business.

At 2:14 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
