The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 12:35 p.m. in room 9 of the Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Chaput, Cordy, Keon and Murray, P.C. (5).
Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Julie Cool and Michael Toye, Analysts.
In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, the committee continued to examine the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 1, Monday, November 27, 2006.)

Jacques Légaré, Professor Emeritus of Demography, Université de Montréal;
Marcel Mérette, Associate Professor of Economics, University of Ottawa;
Neena L. Chappell, Canada Research Chair in Social Gerontology and Professor of Sociology, Centre on Aging, University of Victorian (by videoconference);
Gloria Gutman, Professor, Gerontology, Simon Fraser University, and Director, Dr. Tong Louie Living Laboratory (by videoconference).
The Chair made a statement.
Messrs. Légaré and Mérette made statements and answered questions.
At 1:56 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 1:58 p.m., the committee resumed.
The Honourable Senator Keon moved that the committee approve the draft budget for its special study on aging and that the Chair submit the following budget for approval to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

| Other expenses | 2,500 |
| TOTAL | $ 96,050 |
The question being put on the motion, it was resolved in the affirmative.
Ms. Chappell and Ms. Gutman made statements and answered questions.
At 3:14 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
