The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 12:33 p.m. in room 9 of the Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Chaput, Cook, Keon, Mercer and Murray, P.C. (6).

Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Michael Toye, Analyst.

In attendance: Official Senate reporters.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, the committee continued to examine the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 1, Monday, November 27, 2006.)

WITNESSES:

Statistics Canada:

Leroy Stone, Associate Director General, Unpaid Work Analysis;

Danielle Zietsma, Senior Economist, Labour Statistics Division.

Conference Board of Canada:

Paul Darby, Deputy Chief Economist.

Certified General Accountants Association of Canada:

Rock Lefebvre, Vice-President, Research and Standards.

As individuals:

Derwyn Sangster, former Director, Business, Canadian Labour and Business Centre;

Brigid Hayes, former Director, Labour, Canadian Labour and Business Centre;

Monica Townson, economic consultant.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Messrs. Stone, Lefebvre and Darby made presentations and, along with Ms. Zietsma, answered questions.

At 1:45 p.m., the committee recessed.

At 1:53 p.m., the committee reconvened.

Mr. Sangster, Ms. Hayes and Ms. Townson made presentations and answered questions.

At 3:14 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
