The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 12:32 p.m. in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Cordy, Keon and Murray, P.C. (4).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Michael Toye and Clara Morgan, Research Analysts.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 7, the committee continued its examination of the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For the complete text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 1, Monday, November 27, 2006.)

WITNESSES:

As an individual:

Janice M. Keele, Canada Research Chair in Aging and Caregiving Policy and Director, Nova Scotia Centre on Aging, Mount Saint Vincent University.

Canadian Caregiver Coalition:

Palmier Stevenson-Young, President.

Group of IX:

Bernie LaRusic, Vice Chairperson.

As an individual:

Judy Lynn Richards, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Prince Edward Island.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Ms. Keefe and Ms. Stevenson-Young made presentations and answered questions.

At 1:46 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 1:54 p.m., the committee resumed.

The Chair made a statement.

Mr. LaRusic and Ms. Richards made presentations and answered questions.

At 3:03 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Ms. Henningsen, Ms. Baxter, Dr. Librach and Mr. Aherne made presentations and answered questions.

At 2:28 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:30 p.m., the committee resumed.

It was agreed to send two representatives to the 3rd World Ageing and Generations Congress, St. Gallen, Switzerland, in September 2007.

At 2:31 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
