The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 4:03 p.m. in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Champagne, P.C., Chaput, Comeau, Jaffer, Murray, P.C., Robichaud, P.C., and Tardif (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marie-Ève Hudon and Élise Hurtubise- Loranger.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee proceeded to study, for the purpose of reporting on it from time to time, the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it, within those institutions subject to the act. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 2, Monday, May 15, 2006).

WITNESSES:

Association des juristes d'expression française de la Nouvelle-Écosse:

Marie-Claude Rioux, Executive Director.

Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada:

Michèle Demers, President;

Jon Peirce, Employment Relations Officer.

Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada:

Jody Dallaire, President;

Monica Lysack, Executive Director;

Amanda Mayer, Finance and Administration Coordinator.

The Chairman made an opening statement.

Ms. Rioux made a statement and then answered questions.

At 4:43 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 4:48 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Demers made a statement and then answered questions.

At 5:43 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:58 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Lysack made an opening statement. In the temporary absence of Ms. Dallaire, Ms. Mayer made a statement on her behalf. At 6:15 p.m., Ms. Dallaire arrived and joined the other witnesses. Ms. Lysack and Ms. Dallaire answered questions.

At 6:57 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
