The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day, at 4:10 p.m., in room 7, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Kenny, Nolin, and Peterson (4).
In attendance: Gaƫtane Lemay, Co-clerk of the committee, Committees Directorate; Melissa Radford and Jason Yung, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; Major-General (ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Advisor; Captain (N) John Gardam, DND Liaison Officer.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the committee continued its study on the national security policy of Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)
WITNESSES:
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada:
David Mulroney, Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Interdepartmental Coordinator for Afghanistan;
Kerry Buck, Director General, Afghanistan Task Force.
Canadian International Development Agency:
Stephen Wallace, Vice-President, Afghanistan Task Force.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police:
Chief Superintendent D.C. David Beer, Director General, International Policing;
Pierre-Yves Bourduas, Deputy Commissioner, Federal Services and Central Region.
Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee met in camera to consider its draft agenda.
It was agreed that staff be permitted to remain during the in camera portion of the meeting.
At 4:31 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 4:34 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting in public in room 2, Victoria Building.
The chair made an opening statement.
Mr. Mulroney made an opening statement and, together with Ms. Buck, answered questions.
At 6:15 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 6:24 p.m., the committee resumed.
Mr. Wallace and Mr. Bourduas each made an opening statement and, together with Mr. Beer, answered questions.
At 7:56 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 7:59 p.m., the committee resumed in camera, in room 7, Victoria Building.
At 8:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
