The Subcommittee on Population Health met this day at 4:18 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Wilbert J. Keon, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Brown, Callbeck, Cook, Fairbairn, P.C. and Keon (5).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Eggleton, P.C. (1).

In attendance: Odette Madore and Michael Toye, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 and delegated on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, the subcommittee continued its examination on the social determinants of health. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1).

WITNESSES:

Statistics Canada:

Michael Wolfson, Assistant Chief Statistician, Analysis and Development.

Institute of Population and Public Health:

Dr. John Frank, Scientific Director of CIHR.

Human Resources and Social Development Canada:

Cliff Halliwell, Director General, Strategic Policy Research Directorate.

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada:

Marc Brooks, Director General, Community Development Branch, Socio-economic Policy and Regional Operations.

Mr. Wolfson, Mr. Halliwell, Dr. Frank and Mr. Brooks each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 5:57 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.
