The Subcommittee on Cities met this day at 10:47 a.m. in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Dyck, Eggleton, P.C., Martin and Segal (5).

In attendance: Havi Echenberg and Robin Wisener, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, and delegated to the Subcommittee on Cities on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, the subcommittee continued its examination on issues pertaining to Canada's largest cities. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the subcommittee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation:

John Black, Director, Housing Needs Policy;

Debra Darke, Director, Community Development.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada:

Frank Vermaeten, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister;

Frank Fedyk, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister;

Dominique La Salle, Director General, Seniors and Pension Policy Secretariat;

Jane Weldon, Director General, Homelessness Partnering Secretariat.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Vermaeten and Mr. Black made a presentation and, together with Ms. Weldon, Mr. Fedyk, Mr. La Salle, Mr. Black and Ms. Darke, answered questions.

At 12:33 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.

At 12:02 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Powell and Dr. Doupe each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 12:41 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:42 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee resumed in camera to discuss future business.

At 12:46 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.
