The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:04 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cordy, Eggleton, P.C., Keon, Martin, Munson, Ogilvie, Pépin, and Segal (9).

In attendance: Havi Echenberg and Daniel Thompson, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, the committee began its study on accessibility of postsecondary education in Canada.

WITNESSES:

Canadian Council on Learning:

Dr. Paul Cappon, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada:

Paul Davidson, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Herbert O'Heron, Senior Advisor, Office of the Vice-President (National Affairs).

Statistics Canada:

Patrice de Broucker, Chief, Education Indicators and Special Projects.

The chair made an opening statement.

The Honourable Senator Callbeck made a statement.

Dr. Cappon, Mr. Davidson and Mr. de Broucker each made a presentation, and with Mr. O'Heron, answered questions.

At 5:50 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, the committee continued its study on accessibility of postsecondary education in Canada.

Richard E. Mueller, Visiting Fellow, Social Analysis Division.

University of Ottawa:

Ross Finnie, Professor, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Frenette, Mr. Mueller and Mr. Binnie each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 12:30 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
