The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day at 4 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Pamela Wallin, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Dallaire, Day, Manning, Meighen, Nolin, Patterson, Pépin and Wallin (9).
In attendance: Martin Auger and Holly Porteous, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Tracie LeBlanc, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, the committee continued its study on the national security and defence policies of Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1) (The role of our Forces in Afghanistan currently and post 2011)
WITNESS:
As an individual:
Chris Alexander, former Canadian Ambassador to Afghanistan and former United Nations Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan.
Mr. Alexander made a statement and answered questions.
At 5 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 5:03 p.m., the committee, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), proceeded in camera to discuss its draft agenda.
It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera portions of today's meeting.
At 5:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

WITNESS:

Vice-Admiral Denis Rouleau, OMM, MSM, CD, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff.
Minister MacKay made a statement and, together with Vice-Admiral Denis Rouleau, answered questions.
At 5:09 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 5:12 p.m., the committee, pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), proceeded in camera to discuss its draft report.
It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera portions of today's meeting.
It was agreed that Senator Segal be named the third member of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure until Senator Manning is again a member of the committee.
It was agreed that the committee adopt the draft report and that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the final text of report.
At 5:37 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
