The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met this day, at 2 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Joseph A. Day, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Buth, Callbeck, Campbell, Comeau, Day, Eaton, Finley, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Martin, Ringuette, Runciman, Seth and Smith (Saurel) (13).

In attendance: Édison Roy-César and Sylvain Fleury, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 3, 2012, the committee continued its examination of the subject-matter of all of Bill C-38, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on March 29, 2012 and other measures, introduced in the House of Commons on April 26, 2012, in advance of the said bill coming before the Senate. WITNESSES:

Jason Clemens, Director of Research.

Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP):

Susan Eng, Vice President, Advocacy.

Canadian Auto Workers:

Jim Stanford, Economist (by video conference).

Mr. Clemens made a statement and answered questions.

Ms. Eng made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Stanford made a statement and answered questions.

At 3:47 p.m., the Honourable Senator Martin replaced the Honourable Senator Comeau as a member of the committee.

At 4:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
