Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration Elects
Speaker Pierre Claude Nolin as Chair

OTTAWA, December 4, 2014 – Speaker Pierre Claude Nolin (De Salaberry - Québec) has been elected Chair of the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration. His appointment is effective December 4, 2014 and he is replacing Senator Noël A. Kinsella who has announced his retirement from the Senate.

“I am honored to have been asked to chair Internal Economy. I am very conscious of the issues of transparency and accountability before us and am eager to continue the good work of my colleagues on the committee”, said Speaker Nolin.

Speaker Nolin will join the Deputy Chair, Senator George J. Furey (Newfoundland and Labrador) who nominated him and Senator Larry Smith (Saurel - Quebec) on the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure (Steering Committee).

“I was pleased to nominate my longtime colleague and friend as chair of Internal Economy. I am confident we will work well together”, said Senator George Furey, Deputy Chair of the committee.

Speaker Nolin was appointed to the Senate in 1993. On November 20th, 2013 he was unanimously elected by his peers as Speaker pro tempore of the Senate, and on November 26, 2014, he was appointed Speaker of the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Harper.

Other members of the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration include senators Larry W. Campbell (British Columbia),  Jane Cordy (Nova Scotia), Norman E. Doyle (Newfoundland and Labrador), Daniel Lang (Yukon), Marjory LeBreton (Ontario), Elizabeth Marshall (Newfoundland and Labrador), Jim Munson (Ottawa / Rideau Canal - Ontario), David Tkachuk (Saskatchewan), Vernon White (Ontario), Percy E. Downe (Charlottetown, PEI), Fabian Manning (Newfoundland and Labrador), and David Wells (Newfoundland and Labrador).
