The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Terry M. Mercer, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Dagenais, Gagné, Mercer, Merchant, Ogilvie, Oh, Plett, Pratte and Tardif (10).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 6, 2016, the committee continued its study on the acquisition of farmland in Canada and its potential impact on the farming sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 17.)

WITNESSES:

Farm Credit Canada:

Michael Hoffort, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Corinna Mitchell-Beaudin, Executive Vice-President and Chief Risk Officer;

Jean-Philippe Gervais, Vice President and Chief Agricultural Economist.

Union des producteurs agricoles du Québec:

Charles-Félix Ross, Executive Director.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Hoffort made a statement and, together with Ms. Mitchell-Beaudin and Mr. Gervais, answered questions.

At 8:50 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:15 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Ross made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:40 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
