The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 9 a.m., in room 257, East Block, for the purpose of holding a reorganization meeting, pursuant to the order of the Senate of November 7, 2017.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Gagné, Maltais, McIntyre, Mégie, Poirier and Tardif (7).
In attendance: Maxime Fortin, Clerk, Senate Committees Directorate; Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of the Senate of November 7, 2017, the clerk of the committee presided over the election of the chair.
The Honourable Senator Gagné moved:
That the Honourable Senator Cormier do take the chair of this committee.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
The clerk invited Senator Cormier to assume the chair.
The chair presided over the election of the deputy chair.
The Honourable Senator Maltais moved:
That the Honourable Senator Poirier be deputy chair of this committee.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
The Honourable Senator Gagné moved:
That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be composed of the chair, the deputy chair and one other member of the committee to be designated after the usual consultations; and
That the subcommittee be empowered to make decisions on behalf of the committee with respect to its agenda, to invite witnesses and to schedule hearings.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
At 9:06 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 9:07 a.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).
It was agreed that the Minister of Canadian Heritage be invited to the November 28, 2018, meeting.
At 9:21 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
