The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day at 11:30 a.m., in room C128, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Peter M. Boehm, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boehm, Boniface, Coyle, Deacon (Ontario), Gerba, Greene, Harder, P.C., MacDonald and Woo (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Adler and Youance (2).

Participating in the meeting: Zachariah Black, Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 26, 2023, the committee continued its study on Canada’s interests and engagement in Africa.

WITNESSES:

Ben Marc Diendéré, Canada’s Permanent Observer to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (by videoconference).

National Democratic Institute:

Christopher Fomunyoh, Senior Associate for Africa and Special Advisor to the President.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank:

Barbra Chimhandamba, Public Policy Advisor.

Ben Marc Diendéré made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:30 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:35 p.m., the committee resumed.

Christopher Fomunyoh and Barbra Chimhandamba each made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:31 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
