The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day at 4:16 p.m., in room C128, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Peter M. Boehm, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boehm, Boniface, Coyle, Deacon (Ontario), Harder, P.C., MacDonald, Ravalia, Richards and Woo (9).

Participating in the meeting: Nadia Faucher and Brian Hermon, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 10, 2022, the committee continued its study on foreign relations and international trade generally. (Topic: The situation in Haiti)

WITNESSES:

Global Affairs Canada:

Sylvie Bédard, Director General, Central America & Caribbean;

Sébastien Beaulieu, Director General and Chief Security Officer, Security and Emergency Management.

Sylvie Bédard made a statement and, together with Sébastien Beaulieu, answered questions.

At 5:15 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:21 p.m., the committee resumed.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 26, 2023, the committee continued its study on Canada’s interests and engagement in Africa.

WITNESSES:

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations:

Beth Bechdol, Deputy Director General;

Lauren Phillips, Deputy Director, Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division;

Nicholas Sitko, Senior Economist, Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division.

Beth Bechdol and Nicholas Sitko each made a statement and, together with Lauren Phillips, answered questions.

At 6:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
