The Standing Senate Committee on Indigenous Peoples met this day at 9 a.m., in room C128, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Brian Francis, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Arnot, Coyle, Francis, Martin, McNair, Prosper, Sorensen, Tannas and White (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Robinson (1).

Participating in the meeting: Sara Fryer and Antoine Csuzdi-Vallée, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 30, 2024, the committee began its consideration of the subject matter of Bill S-268, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Indian Act.

WITNESSES:

The Honourable Senator Scott Tannas, sponsor of the bill;

Mehek Noorani, Director of Parliamentary Affairs for the Honourable Senator Mary E. Robinson.

Department of Justice Canada:

Joanna Wells, Senior Counsel and Team Leader, Criminal Law Policy Section;

Jarrod Olson, Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section (by videoconference).

Indigenous Services Canada:

Lyndon Simmons, Director of Economic Program Management, Lands and Economic Development Branch.

The Honourable Senator Tannas made a statement and, together with Mehek Noorani, answered questions.

At 9:59 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:03 a.m., the committee resumed.

Joanna Wells made a statement and, together with Jarrod Olson and Lyndon Simmons, answered questions.

At 10:38 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
