The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs met this day at 11:47 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Mobina S. B. Jaffer, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Batters, Carignan, P.C., Clement, Cotter, Dalphond, Forest, Jaffer, Klyne, Pate, Prosper, Simons and Tannas (12).

Participating in the meeting: Iryna Zazulya and Michaela Keenan-Pelletier, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the committee continued its consideration of the subject matter of those elements contained in Divisions 29, 30, 35, 36, 43 and 44 of Part 4, and in Subdivisions B and C of Division 34 of Part 4 of Bill C-69, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on April 16, 2024.

Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police:

Philip Heard, Member, Law Amendments Committee (by videoconference);

Simon Authier, Member, Law Amendments Committee (by videoconference).

Scott Wade, Philip Heard and Simon Authier each made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:54 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
