The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 9:06 a.m., in room W110, 1 Wellington St., the deputy chair, the Honourable Bev Busson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Busson, Cordy, Kutcher, McPhedran, Patterson (Ontario), Quinn and Ravalia (8).

Participating in the meeting: Sarah Yakabowski, Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Friday, February 24, 2023, the committee continued its examination of the government response to the fourth report of the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, tabled with the Clerk of the Senate on July 12, 2022.

Chief George Ginnish made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:17 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:25 a.m., pursuant to Rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to discuss a draft agenda (future business).

At 10:49 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:50 a.m., the committee resumed in public.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the committee continued its examination of Canada’s seal populations and seal harvest.

It was agreed that the special study budget application for public hearings and a fact-finding mission to Newfoundland, for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

At 10:51 a.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 10, 2022, the committee continued its examination of the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada’s fisheries and oceans including maritime safety.

It was agreed that the conference budget application for participation in the Aqua Nor 2023 conference in Trondheim, Norway, for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:
