The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 9:09 a.m., in room W110, 1 Wellington St., the chair, the Honourable Fabian Manning, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Aucoin, Busson, Cuzner, Deacon (Nova Scotia), Kutcher, Manning, McPhedran, Petten and Ravalia (10).

Participating in the meeting: Daniele Lafrance and Kelsey Brennan, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, the committee continued its examination on ocean carbon sequestration and its use in Canada.

WITNESSES:

Na'im Merchant, Executive Director (by videoconference).

As individuals:

Ken Paul, Member of the Wolastoqey Nation at Neqotkuk;

Neil Craik, Professor of Law, Balsillie School of International Affairs, University of Waterloo (by videoconference);

Romany Webb, Deputy Director, Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Columbia University (by videoconference).

Na'im Merchant, Ken Paul, Neil Craik and Romany Webb each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
