The Standing Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Veterans Affairs met this day at 4:03 p.m., in room C128, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Tony Dean, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boehm, Dasko, Dean, Duncan, Gignac, Richards, Smith and Yussuff (8).

Participating in the meeting: Ariel Shapiro and Anne-Marie Therrien-Tremblay, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 10, 2022, the committee continued its study of issues relating to security and defence in the Arctic.

WITNESSES:

Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces:

Lieutenant-General Alain Pelletier, Deputy Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command (by videoconference);

Major-General Iain Huddleston, Commander, Canadian NORAD Region, Canadian Armed Forces (by videoconference);

Jonathan Quinn, Director General, Continental Defence Policy (by videoconference).

As individuals:

Andrea Charron, Director and Associate Professor, Centre for Defence and Security Studies, University of Manitoba (by videoconference);

James Fergusson, Deputy Director, Centre for Defence and Security Studies, University of Manitoba (by videoconference);

Ross Fetterly, Fellow, Canadian Global Affairs Institute.

Andrea Charron, James Fergusson and Ross Fetterly each made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:05 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:35 p.m., the committee resumed.

Lieutenant-General Alain Pelletier made a statement and, together with Major-General Iain Huddleston and Jonathan Quinn, answered questions.

At 7:01 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
